Cwm Yr Eglwys A circular walk with steep ascent and descent for some of the finest views anywhere on the Pembrokeshire coast. This is not a long walk but one to test your fitness, with plenty of reasons to stop and admire the scenery.
Highlights along the way will be visiting the charming coastal beaches of Pwllgwaelod and secluded cove of Cwm Yr Eglwys. We will visit the remains of St Brynachs Church at Cwm Yr Eglwys, where the church was destroyed in what became known as the Royal Charter Storm of 1859.
The walk passes Needle Rock and during the Summer months of May-July you will see razorbills and guillemots perched breeding on this outcrop close to the cliff edge.

ARRIVE: Cwm Yr Eglwys
A short 5 minute walk from Pwllgwaelod is Cwm yr Eglwys (translates into English) as ‘Valley of the Church’. The main attraction, apart from the secluded beach is the the 12th century St. Brynach’s Church. The church was destroyed by the great storm of 1859, and only the west end of the church remains, perched on the high edge of the beach which has now a strong reinforced wall to protect it from any storms to hit the cove.

ARRIVE: Needle Rock
In the summer months, May-July, the sea bird return to breed on Needle Rock and razorbills, guillemots, fulmars and shag cover the rock pirched up high. There is a good little spot to watch these birds on the path, which overlooks Needle Rock- bring your camera!

ARRIVE: Pen Y Fan
The views out to Abergwaun / Fishguard Bay soon open up as you reach the trig point at Pen Y Fan. This is the highest point on the walk at 142m aboce sea level. With spectacular views to enjoy both inland towards Dinas Mountain and Carn Ingli above Newport and as you look back you see the coastline wrapping its way north as far as the eye can see along Cardigan Bay. On a clear day, you can see all the way up to the Llyn Peninsual and a keen eye can spot Bardsey Island.
DEPART: Pen Y Fan
ARRIVE: Pwllgwaelod
A short but dramatic clifftop walk, the route from Pen y Fan down to Pwllgwaelod reveals sweeping views over Fishguard Bay and the wild north Pembrokeshire coast. Expect seabirds riding the updrafts, heather-clad slopes, and glimpses of dolphins on calm days. The descent leads to the sheltered cove of Pwllgwaelod, a favourite local spot with a sandy beach and coastal pub—perfect for relaxing drink after this scenic, windswept stretch of the Coast Path.
Guests should have a good base level of walking fitness, as there will be many steep ascents and descents on the walk. There are also many options for less strenuous or shorter walks, please contact us for further details.
The weather can affect the exact itinerary on the day. However, I will adjust the route accordingly and insure I allow for your interests and abilities too.

Things to consider bringing on the walk: water, snacks, a waterproof jacket, an extra layer, warm hat, sun cap, gloves, sunglasses, rucksack, camera, binoculars.
Terrain
- A mixture of uneven surfaces, gravel, stones, and sandy conditions
- A good level of fitness is required to undertake this walk
- The path is close to the cliff edge, so if you have a fear of hights, then this walk is not deemed suitable.
- There is no shelter on the walk, so appropriate footwear and clothing is required. Anyone deemed not to have the suitable footwear will not be allowed to walk, as this could be hazardous to the individual and the group.
